We had a good meeting and covered all sorts of useful topics!
To start out, we agreed that we need to accept the natural “morphing” process that this group is going through, and rename and reorganize.
How about “CCL Tacoma discussion group”or “study group”?
How about for most meetings we just bring something to share and discuss—article, podcast, documentary? Be sure to share the link ahead of time. Occasionally, if there’s a book most of us are sure we will read anyway, we will wait until everyone has read it and then dedicate a meeting to it.
Reactions to the articles:
A widespread lack of belief in science is why we are stuck. Carbon reduction probably depends on top-down more than bottom-up efforts. Therefore the 2022 elections are absolutely crucial and should be a volunteering focus. Some groups that members recommend participating in are:
Commoncause.org (specifically to spot and eliminate misinformation on social media)
China has agreed to stop building coal plants abroad, but they still open an astonishing number of them domestically every year.
The threat of a financial crisis from the current shortages/high prices of energy with winter ahead — is causing leaders to lose political will and courage right before the Glasgow meeting. Frustrating!
On the “power down” article by Richard Heinberg. Problem with transition to renewables is the massive amounts of energy and resources needed to build them. Rethink nuclear? New tech like “hot rocks”?
Next meeting: Wednesday, Nov 3rd at noon. Bring a positive or hopeful story to share, remembering to send the link ahead of time.
